Comments from Students
A poem written by two fifth graders, Grace Hanson & Alana Gerlach, following
a classroom presentation given by Linda Joy Montgomery:
Through darkness you saw light,
when everything was wrong
you made it right.
You never lost hope,
you found a way to cope.
You inspired me
to be the best that I could be.

After an exchange with the students on "What do you see when you
look in the mirror and what parts of you don't you see when you look
in the mirror? One student spoke up and said "what do you see when
you look in the mirror?" I responded, "Well, I guess you'll
have to be my mirror today because I haven't looked in a mirror in 19
years. Then one 10 year-old student spoke up and said, "Well, let
me tell ya, your looking pretty darn good!"
Stone Mountain School: Grades 4,5,6
During general questions,
a hand went up in the back of the room and this boy was recognized by
one of the counselors. He asked, "When you hear
my voice, do the words form in space in neon colors and then bounce off
the wall behind me and come toward you?" "Not exactly, I answered,
but I think you have a future in special effects!"
Carolina Day School: Boys grades 6,7,8
Among a group
of 7th graders, one student asked, "If you had it to
do over again, would you choose the blindness?" "That's a tough
question," I responded, "my first inclination is to say no,
and yet, I realized that I have learned so much from this experience. It
has taught me to go within and to be aware of my inner guidance. My creativity
has continued to evolve and I have learned a lot about sensitivity and
ways of tuning into the world that I never could have known otherwise."
One
11 year-old student commented, "Speaking of intuition, I have
a story about my dad. My dad was driving a car and all of a sudden had
the intuition to stop, and he slammed on the brakes, and right after that
a bullet passed right in front of his windshield! And if he hadn't stopped
he would have been hit by the bullet."

An 11 year-old girl spoke, "My
mom…one time she was driving
to work in Asheville, going to Mission Hospital and she came to a light
and the light was red and she stopped. Then the light turned green but
she didn't go. She just stayed there with her foot on the brake and she
didn't know why. And then all of a sudden, this car came flying past her,
you know, going through the red light, and she was amazed that she hadn't
moved even though cars were honking behind her."
When we were having a discussion about the tsunami, a 6th grade boy spoke
up, "Maybe there needs to be more studies on earthquakes."
Another 6th grade student: "Were you blind when you went swimming
with dolphins?" "Yes, I was." I responded. "Well,
because I heard that dolphins have a special way of knowing when people
are disabled, that they have a special kind of sight."
After a discussion about dreams and premonitions, one boy exclaimed, "Well,
I have a lot of those premonitions. It's like a flash I see in my mind,
and then a month later it happens. It's just like images, like a flash."
A 6th grade student remarked, "I have a story about my dad. He had
like a dejavous. He went to this basketball game and it was like half-time,
and all of a sudden he said, 'the next thing that's going to happen is
that this guy is going to trip over that chord. And then he looked up and
there was this chord stretched across the floor, and he couldn't stop it
in time, and the guy tripped over the chord and broke his arm."
In response to my asking about stories about intuition: "You probably
won't believe this, but my family was on a vacation and we went to a rain
forest on a hike. I was leaving everyone else, and all of a sudden I just
stopped short on the trail, and this palm tree fell right down in front
of me. And if it had been my brother, he probably would have gotten squished."
Art Space Charter School, 5th grade
A 5th grade boy commented, "I
have a story about playing with some friends of mine. We were doing this
spying game at night and these other guys they climbed this tree to spy
on a friend of mine, but my intuition told me not to climb this tree
because I knew I would fall."
Story from a 5th grade girl: "Where I live at my apartments, they
have a barbecue every year and I was at the barbecue, and my gut feelings
or my intuition told me not to go down the hill. Then my mom drove up and
she told us that there had been a wreck at the bottom of the hill, and
this guy had come through the intersection, hit this girl and then he slammed
into the hill."
5th grade student: In a class discussion about dreams, one boy said, "I
had a dream that I fell out of tree, and the next day I was climbing, and
I fell out of the tree."
5th grade student: "About 5 years ago I had this dream that I was
a really good hockey player, and now, I'm a really good hockey player." So,
I said, "You're living your dream!" "Yes, I am!" He
exclaimed.
